Diagnostics

Dogs and cats can have heart problems too. To evaluate the cardiac status of your pet, we may use either or both of our equipments, the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the phonocardiogram, to make a correct diagnosis.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the gold standard in evaluating cardiac status of your pet. No other diagnostic test, including ultrasound, can accurately determine the source of various arrhythmia and condition abnormalities as is done with ECG testing.

Cardiac sounds are graphically described by our phonocardiogram. Heart murmurs, gallop sounds, systolic clicks, split heart sounds, pericardial friction rubs; these are clearly seen on the monitor and audibly observed.

Blood pressure needs to be checked. Coupled with a sphygmomanometer, we are using a vascular Doppler ultrasound to detect the systole. Normal systole ranges from 90 to 180. A diastole is difficult to detect, and may not be necessary.

Eye and ear examinations are complete with ophthalmoscopes and otoscopes. An intra-oral camera is even available to record lesions in the mouth. When performing an ear examination, we always recommend sedating the animal, or putting your pet in general anesthesia for a better check-up.

Our x-ray needs are referred to a nearby laboratory. For pregnant dogs, we check for fetal heartbeats using our fetal Doppler ultrasound. The check-up is done on dogs not less than 45 days pregnant.

    1. Hi Ching. For such case, we usually provide oxygen, bronchodilators and other lab tests to guide us in treating your pet cat. But since our clinic branches are closed on Sundays, you may assist your pet cat by doing “steam therapy.” Pour steaming hot water on a boil. Place your cat’s head 1 feet above the bowl, and let your pet breathe the steam for 1-3 minutes. Repeat this every 4 hours until breathing eases.
